Samsung Knox Guard: what it is and how to check a used Galaxy
Updated November 3, 2026
Knox Guard is a Samsung service that businesses use to protect phones they finance. According to Samsung's documentation, it can send payment reminders and, as a last resort, lock the phone remotely if payments stay overdue. When payments are back in good standing, the business can restore the phone.
Why it matters when you buy used
If someone sells you a Galaxy that's still being paid off and then stops paying, the lender can lock the phone you now own. It can work perfectly the day you buy it and stop working later. Samsung's documentation says that once a financed phone is fully paid off, the business can end Knox Guard on it, and the policies are removed.
Signs to look for in person
- Payment reminder messages or a lock screen message from a lender or carrier.
- A price that's well below what similar phones sell for, with a seller in a hurry.
- A seller who can't show the phone is paid off.
How to check
Knox Guard isn't something you can see reliably in Settings, so check the IMEI before you meet. LegitPhone's report shows whether Samsung's lender lock is on for that phone. If it's on, don't buy until the seller shows it's paid off and the lock is gone.
One more Samsung and Android check: the Google account lock. It can't be checked from an IMEI. Have the seller remove their Google and Samsung accounts and reset the phone in front of you, then make sure setup doesn't ask for their account.
Check the phone before you pay
